The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has booked two promoters of a Naldehra-based hotel-cum-resort on charges of defrauding the Central Bank of India. The two promoters had allegedly availed of a loan from the bank but did not invest the entire money in a legitimate venture .
Though no arrest has been made in the case so far but CBI teams have raided at least seven locations in Shimla and Panchukla (Haryana), including residences of the accused persons whose identity the agency has not revealed . “Searches were conducted in Shimla and Panchkula (Haryana), including the residential premises of accused persons, which led to recovery of several incriminating documents,” said a CBI spokesman here Wednesday.
According to information, the agency has registered a case U/s 120-B read with section 420, 405, 467, 468 and 471 of IPC and 13(2) read with 13 (1) (d) of Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988 against two partners of a resort and hotel at Naldehra, a popular tourism destination on the outskirts of Shimla.
“The case has been registered after preliminary investigations on a complaint lodged by the Central Bank of India. Besides the two partners, we proposes to include some other persons ,during the course of investigations. Arrests are also not ruled out,” said an official.
Both accused persons had availed a term loan of Rs 1.55 crore from the Central Bank of India, The Mall, Shimla for setting up of a hotel and resort at Naldehra and out of the sanctioned loan, an amount of Rs.1,25 crore was disbursed by the bank authorities three years ago. However, instead of utilising the money for the project, the accused persons allegedly invested a meagre amount of Rs 25-30 lakh towards the construction of the hotel whereas the remaining loan amount was misutilised by diverting the funds for their personal use, and prepared fake and forged bills/invoices.
Thus, the entire investment reportedly turned out to be a Non Performing Asset (NPA). A top official of the bank, when contacted, declined to reveal the details but admitted that the accused persons are residents of Shimla and have been evading the bank.
