The UT Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum has directed Skoda Auto India Private Limited to pay Rs 20,000 as compensation to a Sector 41 resident for the harassment suffered by him.
Sukhwinder Singh said in his complaint that soon after purchasing Skoda Laura in October 2006,it started breaking down too often, forcing him to make continuous rounds to the workshop of Krishna Auto Sales. He said the Skoda Auto India Private Limited should be directed to replace the car.
To substantiate his allegations,Singh said the AC fans of the car were replaced 10 times along with its fly wheel and steering besides the horn which was replaced 25-30 times.
The Skoda Auto India Private Limited denied any deficiency in services stating that the parts replaced were of very high cost but the complainant was not charged a penny. The vehicle had been driven for more than 75,000 kms for over two years on uneven and rough roads of Punjab and Haryana, its reply read.

The Krishna Auto Sales,in its separate written statement, said when a car has been used extensively, there was no question of its replacement.
The forum dismissed the plea taken by the manufacturers that complainant is not a consumer as the vehicle in question was being run for commercial purposes and underwent a lot of wear and tear. Even if the vehicle has been purchased for commercial purposes and if during the warranty period any defect occurs in it,the complainant/purchaser remains very much a consumer whenever any defect or deficiency is alleged, the forum held.
We are of the opinion that any new vehicle by the customer is purchased for his own comfort and in case within the warranty period the vehicle is required to be taken to the workshop time and again, certainly the customer suffers a lot of harassment besides wasting his precious time and energy, the forum ruled.
