Punjab Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh on Monday warned power company Indiabulls against playing into the Akali-BJP hands and intimidating farmers in Gobindpura. He asked the company to compensate the farmers according to the latest land acquisition policy approved by the Centre.

Addressing a press conference at Gurdaspur,Amarinder said the farmers were being forcibly evicted from the land and the Indiabulls had started the work on the project much against the wishes of the farmers there which is unacceptable. He also condemned the lathicharge on farmers who are resisting the government’s move.

The PCC president was here to interact with the workers of the assembly segments of Dera Baba Nanak,Sri Hargobindpur and Fatehgarh Churian. Amarinder said he had cautioned the farmers’ unions against Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal. The former Chief Minister made it clear that he or his party was not against the setting up of the power project by the Indiabulls, but against the way the land was being forcibly taken away from the farmers much against their wishes. He said it is matter of four months (for Assembly elections) after which Congress will be in power and the farmers will get their due. “Either they (the Indiabulls) will have to compensate farmers properly or shut down,” he said.

Accusing Badal of discriminating against Gobindpura farmers,Amarinder asked as to why the CM had got the Gidderbaha NTPC power project canceled while insisting on Indiabulls with whom his government had signed an MOU much against the prevailing practice of inviting global tenders for power projects.

He said, recently in Batala several Congress workers who were objecting to malpractices in preparing of voter lists were brutally manhandled and the accused had been let off after they were handed over to the police. He said, all such police officials will have to pay for their misdeeds.

Asked about what action the Congress government will take against the guilty in the transport scam,he said, the matter will be investigated. He said nobody will be allowed to exploit power as Akalis had done wherein Badals were operating twenty buses on two bus permits.

Similarly,he said, immediate action will be taken against the manipulation of the cable network by the Badals. He said, the media must be free and the Congress government will ensure that it is able to work and decimate information freely.

Amarinder seeks bonus on paddy

Chandigarh: Punjab Congress president Capt Amarinder Singh on Monday demanded bonus on paddy since the Minimum Support Price on the crops was not sufficient due to the rise in the input costs. In a letter to the Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh,Amarinder said that the input costs in agriculture had increased substantially in recent times hence there was a need to give bonus on paddy, which is currently being procured. He said in order to ensure that agriculture remained remunerative to the farmers it was important that they should be given adequate MSP commensurate to the price index, particularly in view of the increasing input costs.
