… but firing near Rose Garden

A few minutes after voting started in the elections to the Panjab University Campus Students’ Council,around half a dozen unidentified youths fired gunshots in the air around 11 am near Rose Garden in Sector 16.

A few minutes after voting started in the elections to the Panjab University Campus Students’ Council,around half a dozen unidentified youths fired gunshots in the air around 11 am near Rose Garden in Sector 16. None was injured.

Police reached the spot immediately. Four youths were rounded up but were later let off after questioning. As per the police,which recovered an empty cartridge from the spot,some of the youths may be students from DAV College.

Hira Lal,who was working in the area,told the police he saw a group of five-six youths,who came in a black Tata Safari and stopped near the garden. “They got out of the car and entered into an altercation. A little later,one of them fired around two-three rounds in the air following which all of them got into the car and sped away,” police said.

“During investigation,we intercepted a black Tata Safari but we let it go after verification and a daily diary report was lodged. We have registered a case,” said a police officer.

On being asked if the incident was connected to the PU elections,a police officer said,“It cannot be said with certainty. However,the involvement of students in the episode cannot be ruled out.”
