“Bunker tractors,” equipped with mechanical hammers and shielded on all sides with wet gunny bags, served as farmers’ “tanks” to confront the heavy duty 12-layer barriers of Haryana police at the Shambhu border amid the Dilli Chalo protests.

Narinder Singh, a farmer from Ambala, mentioned, “The concrete barricade removed by the farmers yesterday was taken down with one of these tractors.” His machine was covered with gunny sacks to minimize the impact of any collision and gas exposure, with the driver donned in special leather gear provided by the farmers’ union.

“These are my Russian tanks. The farmers have named them bunker tractors to protect us from gas,” Narinder Singh explained. Harkirat Singh from Ambala outlined the defense strategy, stating, “We have a complete line of defense with tractors equipped with huge fans to disperse tear gas if needed, followed by bunker tractors. Once we receive the green signal to move forward, it will take about an hour to cross over.”

Gunny sacks transported to the border were used to cover tear gas shells after being drenched with water. Surinder Singh, a farmer, stated, “Once drenched, the wet sack prevents tear gas from escaping the shell.” Additionally, farmers sprayed water on the ground to keep it wet and lessen the impact of the gas.
