Briefly Nation: HPU historian Khan dies,had taught Afghan prez Karzai

Noted historian Ahsan Raza Khan,whose students included Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai,passed away after a brief illness at Shimla’s Indira Gandhi Medical College hospital on Thursday evening.

SHIMLA: Noted historian Ahsan Raza Khan (72),whose students included Afghanistan President Hamid Karzai,passed away after a brief illness at Shimla’s Indira Gandhi Medical College hospital on Thursday evening. Khan started his career as fellow from Aligarh Muslim University and later moved to Indian Institute of Advance Studies,Shimla. Khan joined Himachal University in the 1980s and held several prestigious positions including founder chairman of Department of Journalism and Mass Communication.. Khan wrote ‘The Ayodhaya Syndrome’ in the aftermath of the demolition of Babri Mosque. HPU Vice-Chancellor and staff have condoled the death of the historian.

Five of family killed in road accident

SHIMLA: FIVE members of a family were among six people who were killed while two others sustained serious injuries after a car,in which they were travelling in,fell into a gorge near here on Friday. According to the police,the incident occurred at Mandari,some 50 kms from the state capital,when the driver lost control of the car while negotiating a sharp turn,resulting in the accident. The victims were returning to Shavali village from Dhami,police said. While the six people,including a child,died on the spot,the two injured were rushed to Indira Gandhi Medical College hospital here. The Himachal Pradesh government has announced an immediate relief of Rs 10,000 to the next of kin of the deceased and Rs 5,000 for the injured.

Rs 15 lakh worth drugs seized

CHANDIGARH: Officials of the Punjab Health and Family Welfare Department’s drug control wing seized a huge quantity of habit-forming drugs and intoxicants during raids at various places in the state. The department has launched a special drive against illegal sale of drugs on the directions of Health and Family Welfare minister Madan Mohan Mittal and drugs valued at Rs 15.3 lakh have been confiscated in Zirakpur,Mubarakpur and Phabhat towns. A total of 19,823 bottles of Rexcon cough syrup were seized from Virja Pharmaceuticals in Zirakpur,10,300 capsules of Pandol and 7,400 tablets of Richdol from Pharma Drug and Chemicals. A huge cache of drugs and intoxicants was also confiscated from Sahni Medicine Traders in Mubarakpur,the department said in a press statement.

Haryana revises pay for consumer bodies

CHANDIGARH: The Haryana government has decided that the president and members of the State Consumer Disputes Redressal Forum who have earlier worked in the state or central government will be entitled to last pay drawn,minus the pension emoluments. The state has also decided that henceforth,the president of the District Consumer Forums will get the entry level pay of the district judge. The Haryana government had earlier constitued a committee to rationalise the pay structure of the members of the State Consumer Commission and District Fora.
