Booking of community centres in Chandigarh likely to get costlier

Proposal to hike rates by up to 40% to be tabled before the MC House on June 30

ChandigarhAs per the proposal, the booking rate for some community centres could go up from the current Rs 24,000 to as much as Rs 60,000

Booking community centres in Chandigarh are likely to become significantly more expensive, with proposed rates increasing by up to 40 per cent, a proposal set to be tabled in the civic body suggested.

The proposal to revise the booking charges will be tabled in the Municipal Corporation (MC) House meeting scheduled for June 30.

As per the proposal, the booking rate for some community centres could go up from the current Rs 24,000 to as much as Rs 60,000. If approved, the revised rates will be implemented immediately. This is not the first time such a proposal has come up — in an earlier session, it was referred to a committee for review. Now, the proposal is being brought back with the committee’s recommendations.

The steep increase in rates is expected to spark controversy in the House. Not just the Opposition, but even councillors from the ruling BJP may oppose the hike.

Southern sector sanitation tender also on agenda

Another key item on the meeting’s agenda will be the sanitation contract for the city’s southern sectors.

According to MC officials, a supplementary agenda regarding the draft tender document for GIS-based mechanised and manual sweeping of southern sectors of Chandigarh was placed before the General House of the Corporation in its meeting held on June 3. The draft included the scope of work, bid evaluation criteria, general terms and conditions, analysis of rate (AOR), and other requisitions, for consideration and approval of the General House to float the tender on the GeM portal. In the meeting, it was decided to defer the agenda for the next House meeting.

Subsequently, the committee constituted for preparation and finalisation of draft tender document, preparation of cost analysis, technical and financial evaluation etc. (till allotment of work to L1 firm), held its meeting on June 9 and recommended to have a pre-tender consultation meeting to gather valuable inputs and suggestions from all concerned and interested parties prior to the finalisation of the tender document.

A pre-tender consultation meeting was subsequently held on June 18, with participation from various firms with their suggestions. Considering these suggestions, the committee met again on June 23 and June 27, to finalise the tender document. It is important to note that the existing contract with Lion Services Limited is set to expire on June 30.

In view of the aforementioned developments and to ensure uninterrupted sanitation services in the southern Sectors of Chandigarh and considering the time required to complete the new tender process and allot the work to the successful bidder (L1), the matter will be placed before the General House for consideration and approval.

Proposal to allot 70 unipoles for ads

The MC will also bring a proposal to allot 70 unipoles for advertising purposes. These unipoles, which have already received administrative approval for installation, are expected to generate much-needed revenue for the cash-strapped civic body. The move is being seen as part of efforts to strengthen the corporation’s financial standing.
