Haryana Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Gurnam Singh Chaduni and eight others were granted bail Thursday by a court in Kurukshetra, a week after they were arrested or blocking National Highway 44 (Delhi-Chandigarh) during a protest.
Farmers had protested and blocked NH-44 near Pipli in Kurukshetra on June 12 seeking immediate release of Chaduni and others, besides an MSP of Rs 6,400 per quintal on sunflower. After multiple rounds of talks with the district administration of Kurukshetra, the farmers eventually lifted the blockade as the government assured them that their demands shall be met.
Besides Chaduni, the other prominent leaders who will be released today include Rakesh Bains, Jasbir Singh Mamumajra, Prince Waraich, Jarnail Singh, Jairam, Gulab Singh, Surjit Singh and Pankaj.
The farmers had blocked NH-44 since Monday afternoon and traffic on the busy Delhi-Chandigarh-Amritsar highway had been disrupted for over 33 hours till the blockades were removed late Tuesday night.
