The councillors of BJP and SAD condemned the decision of the Congress-ruled Municipal Corporation of Chandigarh of imposing house tax on the city residents.

In a meeting held on Tuesday,it was decided that the Bharatiya Janata Party would protest against the issue of tax during the ‘jail bharo andolan’ which is to be organised by the party on June 23.

The approval for imposition of the tax on residential property was accorded by the Punjab Governor and UT Administrator Shivraj V Patil.

The protest by the party is part of the nationwide campaign against corruption. Similar protests will be held in other parts of the country as well.

In Chandigarh, apart from the issue of corruption, the imposition of House Tax will be opposed.

As per the proposal, house tax amounting to Re 1 per square yard annually would be imposed. The Administration has also announced that the review of the amount of tax will be done in three months as at the current rate, the revenue generated will not be very high.

BJP leader Arun Sood termed the passing of the house tax agenda without any discussion in house as an undemocratic decision of the Congress.

Sood also stated that the Congress party in their election manifesto of the MC elections had promised that they will not impose any house tax.

Mayor Subhash Chawla after his election had announced that there would be no imposition of house tax during his tenure.

The Congress had betrayed the faith of the people, alleged Sood.

The BJP leaders stated that the decision was taken with the support of nominated councillors despite opposition from BJP-SAD. Sood further stated that the Congress party had stated a bundle of lies by saying that the Municipal Corporation would be receiving a grant from the central government in lieu of imposing of the house tax.
