Demanding compensation for Chamel Singh’s family,a resident of Jammu and Kashmir who died in Kot Lakhpat jail in Pakistan in January, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Saturday said that the central government should compensate Singh’s family by giving Rs 25 lakh while the state government should give Rs 1 crore.

Addressing a press conference here at BJP’s office,MP Avinash Rai Khanna said that like Sarabjit, the family of Chamel Singh should also also be given financial help.

However,BJP members on Saturday also donated Rs 2.86 lakh to Singh’s wife Kamlesh and his son Dara Singh. Khanna also stressed that though the Pakistan government is saying that there are a total of 270 Indians lodged in the Pakistan jails of which 215 are fishermen and the rest are others, unofficially, there are 700 to 800 Indians who are lodged in jails on one pretext or the other.

“The central government should take up the matter and can check that those prisoners who have completed their sentences should be brought back to India. If the government had taken tough action after Chamel Singh’s death, the Sarabjit incident could have been averted. Even the Indian government failed to create international pressure on Pakistan for killing two Indians and removing their organs as well,” he added.

The BJP has also written to the Human Rights Commission to take action against those in Pakistan who had violated the human rights of Chamel Singh and separate letters have also been written to Indian President,Prime Minister and Home Minister, claimed Rai.

The BJP also performed a ‘havan’ at its regional office to pray for a peaceful heavenly abode for Singh. Satat Sharma, former BJP general secretary,J&K said that he had even submitted letter to the state chief minister highlighting the case of Singh.

Khanna also said that he also raised the issue in Rajya Sabha and helped in procuring Chamel Singh’s dead body from the Pakistani jail at his own expense. “The postmortem report of Chamel had established that his heart, kidney and lungs had been taken out in Pakistan but the central government took no concrete steps,” he added.

Kamal Sharma,BJP Punjab president, added that the family of Chamel Singh was very poor and so just like Sarabjit’s family, his family should be given financial assistance. The son of Chamel Singh demanded that his father should be given the status of ‘Shaheed’.’
