BJP protest against Bansal turns violent, two injured in clashes

The protests by the BJP’s city unit against former Union Minister Pawan Kumar Bansal took a violent turn on Sunday after party members and Congress workers clashed at the Industrial Area forcing police to resort to lathicharging to defuse the situation. Two BJP workers were injured in the clashes.

The BJP had announced its decision to observe a “Black Week” after the CBI,in its chargesheet filed recently, named Bansal as a prosecution witness. Bansal’s nephew Vijay Singla was arrested by CBI on charges of accepting bribe amounting to Rs 90 lakh from a member of the Railway Board.

BJP decided that protests would be held throughout the week wherever Bansal went with party workers waving black flags wherever the local MP addressed a public meeting in the city.

Bansal was scheduled to address a public meeting at Colony Number 4,Industrial Area Phase I. When he reached the spot along with other leaders,BJP workers waved black flags and raised slogans. Once Bansal had entered the venue, some Congress workers allegedly pelted stones at the protesters setting off the clashes. Police then resorted to a cane-charge to disperse the crowd.

One BJP worker,Rajiv Pandey, received head injuries while the car windshields of another party worker Ravi Rawat were smashed. The windows of a police vehicle also smashed. BJP workers allege that one of them was also attacked at his residence in Colony Number 4.

President of the city BJP unit Sanjay Tandon said: “The Congress goons attacked BJP workers under police protection. As the CBI is protecting Pawan Bansal, the city police is protecting the miscreants here. It was bad management by the police that the BJP workers were beaten up. I have taken up the issue with the Adviser.”

Meanwhile Congress leader Pardeep Chhabra said the BJP was indulging in cheap politics by showing black flags. “The senior leaders of the party were nowhere to be seen. Rather the party workers were put at the forefront. The BJP will get its answer in 2014,” said Chhabra.
