The Haryana government’s much-hyped proposal for revival of Saraswati river has found a critic from within its own party.
BJP’s MP Rajkumar Saini has stated that there are many rivers that are present where there isn’t a drop of water. He said that instead the Haryana government should ensure that if there is good flow of water below the surface, it should be provided to the people.
The Haryana government has started the process of reviving the Saraswati, a mythical river, after water was found when digging was going on at what is considered as its route. The government has constituted Saraswati Heritage Development Board (SHDB) and a budget of Rs 50 crore was approved for the project.
Talking to The Indian Express ,Rajkumar Saini said, “If there is water flowing below the surface, the government should harness it and provide it to people for drinking. There are many rivers already present that are dry. There is not a drop of water in these.”
Saini further said that there are many proposals that are mooted just for misusing funds. “We are looking at the project from that angle. We do not want that funds should be misused,” he said.
In a meeting of the SHDB held under the chairmanship of Haryana Chief Minister Manohar Lal Khattar, a decision was taken to complete the digging work from its point of origin in Yamunanagar district to Kurukshetra.
It was further decided that Saraswati Mahotsav would be celebrated. The Haryana government is of the opinion that even if the river is not discovered in its original form, a symbolic one will be there.
