BJP,INLD win in 3 wards each; Congress claims victory as Independents bag 14

PMC polls: Cong to stake claim for Mayor’s post; HJC fails to open account.

The BJP and INLD received a drubbing in the elections to the Panchkula Municipal Corporation (PMC),results of which were declared here on Tuesday. The Congress,which did not contest on its symbol but supported Independent candidates,claimed that it had swept the elections and would stake claim for the Mayor’s post.

The BJP and INLD won in three wards each while the Haryana Janhit Congress (HJC) failed to open its account. The Congress claimed that it had won in all the 14 wards,with the Independents supported by the party emerging victorious in the elections for the corporation that were held for the first time.

The BJP won in ward no. 13,12 and 9. In ward no. 9,BJP candidate C B Goel trounced Tarseem Garg,a Congress supported candidate,while Chaitanya Rai Vashisht bagged the third place. In ward no 12,BJP candidate Sunil Talwar won by a margin of 449 votes against the nearest rivals,Ravinder Kumar and Jitendar Sandhu. From ward no 13,party candidate Ravi Kant won by a margin of 139 votes,drubbing his nearest rivals,Subash Nishad and Rajbir Singh.

The INLD candidates won from ward no. 3,4 and 8. INLD candidate Surjeet Kaur won by a margin of 1,731 votes defeating nearest rivals Harpreet Kaur and Rajesh Kumari in ward no. 3. From ward no. 4,party candidate Satinder Singh won by a margin of 2,234 votes,drubbing his nearest rivals Bhim Singh and Gurbagh Singh. In ward no. 8,Kulji Kaur emerged victorious and she won by a margin of 261 votes after defeating her nearest rivals Pritam Singh and Lakshmi Devi.

Interestingly,the Congress-supported candidates won from two wards in Kalka as well. In ward no. 1 and 2 of Kalka,Congress-supported candidates Som Nath and Sangat Singh won the elections.

The Congress claimed victory in other wards as well. From ward no. 5,Congress-supported candidate Krishan Lamba won the elections while from ward no. 6,7,10,11,14,15,16,17,18,19 and 20,the Congress-supported candidates won. From ward no. 6,Seema Devi; from ward no. 7,Vinod Kumar; from ward no. 10,Bhavna Gupta; from ward no. 11,Kanta Devi; from ward no. 14,Lily Bawa; from ward no. 15,Omvati Puniya; from ward no. 16,Mamta Rani; from ward no. 17,Dalbir Kaur; from ward no. 18,Upinder Walia; from ward no. 19,Surinder Singh and from ward no. 20,Salim Dabkori won the elections.

The Congress’s Panchkula MLA D K Bansal said the results had come as approval of the developmental works that the party had carried out in the city. “We have won in 14 wards and the Mayor will be from the Congress,” he added.

However,the BJP and INLD said that the Congress had lost the elections. INLD district urban president Manoj Agarwal said the party didn’t contest on its symbol and its claim to win the elections was a hoax. BJP district president Vishal Seth said,“The Congress won as it has been pursuing the policy of appeasement. It has wooed the voters from economically weaker sections of society by using money power. Congress victory has been possible due to high turnout in rural areas.”
