With the bus service from Chandigarh to Punjab and other areas affected due to the call for bandh given by the NDA,the passengers were a harried lot on Thursday. A large number of passengers were stranded at the bus stands in the city waiting for the service to get normal.
The buses refused to carry passengers who were waiting in lines for hours together to purchase tickets. And the buses which did leave for their destinations were steered back to the bus stand by protesters at various places.
Ravinder Kandhari,a city-based businessman, said: I had taken a bus from Sector 43 bus stand to Patiala in the morning, but it stopped on the way owing to the protesters who had put up barricades. The driver and the conductor fled the scene and all the passengers were left stranded. With great difficulty and inconvenience,I managed to hail an auto to the bus stand, and since then I have been demanding a refund of my ticket.
Another harassed passenger was Surinder Kaur, who said,I arrived from Delhi early in the morning and have to rush to Ropar for my doctors appointment this evening. I have been waiting here in the hope that this would soon get over and I would travel to make it in time for my treatment. I am travelling alone and have no acquaintance in Chandigarh to go to.
Aman Sharma, another troubled passenger, said: I have my cousins engagement in Amritsar today and really need to make it in time for that. I have been waiting here for three hours in the hope of catching a bus but there seems to be no assistance from the authorities here. I will have to hail a cab which would cost me double the amount now.
The police were called in after a tussle that ensued between the authorities and the passengers who bought tickets and demanded a refund thereafter.
