Freedom fighter Shaheed Bhagat Singh has been a pride of Punjab. But the manner in which this great hero of Indian freedom struggle is currently being used by political parties and politicians is not going down well with his descendants.
Dr Amarjeet Singh, nephew of Bhagat Singh, says: Bhagat Singh seems to have become a coin which every one wants to encash. But the sad part is that no one has actually understood the great freedom fighter. Rebel Akali leader Manpreet Singh Badal uses Bhagat Singh as a symbol but at the same time talks of the trickle (down) theory, which is actually an opposite of all that Bhagat Singh stood for.
Trickle-down theory is a failed policy of neo-liberalism,which came out way back in 1896. Bhagat Singh stood for Swaraj, which he said would come through participation of 90 per cent of the Indian population. Bhagat Singh talked of Swadeshi. Manpreet claims that he reads a lot but he needs to show a lot more maturity if he wants to follow and use Bhagat Singh as a symbol, says Singh.
Taking about the ruling party,he adds: The case of Shiromani Akali Dal is no good. The party first announces its excise policy claiming that it will make extra money from selling liquor to Punjab and then pump in this money to sports. Its strange. Amid all this,a lost Congress is trying to find a place for itself and its share of the pie.
Bhagat Singh has taken a special place in Punjab politics after former finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal announced him as his hero. In his speeches,Manpreet has always claimed that it is the sacrifices made by Bhagat Singh that inspired him to venture out on a new path. Feeling left out,the Congress recently announced that it would hold a rally at Khatkar Kalan on March 23. In between,SAD announced the state games named after the legendary freedom fighter.
But then what is the use of all this? The Centre has allocated Rs 17 crore to develop the Khatkar Kalan spot. This was done last year and only thing that the Punjab government has done till date is acquire land to develop this spot. Such actions show that our politicians and leaders are not serious about the philosophies and the paths shown by our great leaders. They simply offer lip service, says Singh.
