A day after a woman was killed and another injured in a bear attack in the Kalwara forest area in Chamba district, the state Forest and Wildlife Department said it was a sow (female bear) accompanied by her cubs when it attacked both women who inadvertently came closer to the animals.

The women — Pinki Devi, 36, and Thanti Devi, 48, both relatives from Dalpa village — had gone to the forest to collect fodder for cattle when they were attacked around 9.30 am Friday.

Pinki Devi died on the spot, while Thanti Devi is undergoing treatment at the hospital, officials said, adding that she is stable.

The Forest and Wildlife Department has started the process of releasing Rs 4 lakh compensation to Pinki Devi’s kin.

Chamba Divisional Forest Officer (DFO) Kritigaya Kumar said, “The field inspection suggests it was a sow (female bear) which attacked both women in the forest. Pug marks of the sow and cubs were found on the spot. The victims were on a hill when the bear attacked them. One of the women fell down the hill and suffered more injuries. Locals also spotted the sow with her cubs. The sow and her cubs were hiding but panicked when the women inadvertently walked close to the animals. Our team reached the spot after an hour-long trek.”

Sources said both women were rushed to Government Medical College in Chamba, where doctors proclaimed Pinky Devi dead upon arrival.

Injured Thanti Devi has recorded her statement to forest & wildlife department officials and the local police.

The Forest and Wildlife Department in Shimla has been receiving many reports of bear sightings in Rajgarh area in Sirmaur district.
