Local MP Pawan Kumar Bansal on Thursday said that the BJP did not respect the court and rush to set up a kangaroo court to pass judgments. He added that if the BJP had in the past few months studied the CBI chargesheet and heard the transcripts, they would have realised that he did not give, former Railway Board member and an accused in the case,Mahesh Kumar the appointment he wanted. Rather he thwarted his chances of becoming Member (Electrical) that he had wanted.

Addressing a press conference after the House general meeting,Bansal said that he was answerable to the people of Chandigarh and would have answered all questions of the BJP if they had listened. He added that the transcripts of conversation recorded by CBI makes it clear that the Mahesh Kumar was not happy with appointment as Member Staff as this thwarted his chance of becoming Member (Electrical). Bansal added that Mahesh Kumar wanted him to stall the process for two months so that he could get the post he wanted.

On being questioned about his nephew being caught taking bribe he said that it was because of this that he had to resign. “In my reply to the CBI when they questioned me for six hours,I told them that this is the reason I am sitting before you and not at rail bhawan. I feel resigning from the Ministry was wrong on my part,” he said.

He added that the CBI made him a witness and not an accused as there was nothing against him. He said that even though he had cleared the file for appointment on April 18,in the transcripts of the conversation someone is heard telling Mahesh Kumar that the Minister has not moved the file.

Taking potshots at senior BJP leaders,Bansal said,“I challenge them to prove the allegations. A senior advocate has made these deductions. If in Sector 15 he can own a house along with his son,why cant I own a house jointly with my sister-in-law. The courts have not said a word about me. BJP leaders are speaking without facts.”

Bansal added that his family had no business connections with his nephew and his relatives would themselves explain the situation. He added that the city has seen unprecedented development in the past 15 years.

Sidelights

* Throughout the proceedings,Bansal kept asking the Congress councillors not to get provoked by the BJP. “You are falling into their trap. This is what they want.”

* The BJP councillors’ attempt to name Prime Minister Manmohan Singh and UPA chief Sonia Gandhi led to frayed tempers in the House. The Mayor stated that the BJP councillors did not have any standing to talk about them.

* The nominated councillors came out in Bansal’s support, confronting the BJP councillors and asking them to let him speak.

* Amidst the chaos, four agenda items were passed.
