Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on
Monday filed an application before a lower court of Chandigarh seeking permission to withdraw a case of criminal defamation filed against former chief minister Captain Amarinder Singh. The application was filed by Advocate Virinder Issar, counsel for Badal in the defamation case which was filed in 2002.
Badals contention in withdrawing the case is that even though the case is bound to succeed but without creating prejudice and in order to create atmosphere of cordiality of relationship permission has been sought to withdraw the criminal defamation case. The application has been taken on record and will come up for adjudication on October 16. The case was still in the initial stage, with Badal recording his statement in the case on July 30,2006. Levelling allegations of defamation against Amarinder,Badal had recorded his statements in the court of the then Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) Y S Rathore. The case is based on a letter, which Badal maintained,Amarinder had written to him on September 4,2001.
According to Badal,Amarinder had listed 16 properties alleged to be owned by Badal situated in India at Chandigarh,Badal village,Jodhpur,New Delhi and Muktsar. The letter also mentioned Badals alleged properties outside India, viz,Perth,Australia; California,USA; Manhattan,New York; and parking lots, the New York. The value of these properties,as per Amarinder, was about Rs 3,500 crore. Badal, however, had stated that he did not own any property either at Jodhpur,New Delhi,Muktsar or abroad.
