Taking a strong exception to the move of separate committee in Haryana to take over the control of gurdwaras in the state, Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal on Monday ,said that any such move by the ‘modern day mahants’ at the behest of the Congress would not be tolerated at any cost.

Interacting with the media after attending a function to mark the death anniversary of late Maan Singh Manhera here today, Badal reiterated his commitment to thwart the move of the Congress in Haryana to divide the Sikhs by constituting separate committee for management of gurdwaras. He said through this “sinister move” the Congress wants to weaken the supreme body of Sikhs — the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC).

Badal said the Congress was dreaming of recapturing power in Haryana by pursuing its age old policy of ‘divide and rule’, but the wise Sikh voters of the state will not be swayed by these tactics and they would definitely teach Congress a lesson for this “heinous crime”.

The Chief Minister categorically said that the sole motive of the Shiromani Akal Dal was to uphold the sovereignty of SGPC.

He said the Congress was following the footsteps of the British rulers to wrest the control of gurdwaras through its agents.
