An NRI man from California, US, who returned home around a month ago, shot dead his nephew over a land dispute at Machhike in Punjab’s Moga district on Saturday, the police said, adding that he had been arrested.

The Moga police said Bahadur Singh, in his seventies, had been settled in the US for decades, along with his five children. On Saturday, he allegedly opened fire at his nephew, Navdeep Singh, in his thirties, over a piece of disputed land at Machhike, a village in the Nihal Singh Wala subdivision.

“Bahadur Singh opened fire with his licensed 32-bore weapon. He fired twice, and one of the bullets hit Navdeep’s head, and he died on the spot,” said Assistant Sub Inspector Jaswant Singh, in charge of the Bilaspur police post.
Bahadur Singh also allegedly tried to flee in his four-wheeler by running over the body, according to the police.

ASI Jaswant Singh said that Bahadur Singh and his younger brother Balwinder Singh (Navdeep’s father) owned nearly 100 acres of land in the village. However, Balwinder died in an accident around two years ago. Since then, nearly 30 acres have been under dispute between Bahadur Singh and his nephew.

Gurpreet Kaur, Navdeep’s wife, told the police that when they reached the disputed land on Saturday, Bahadur Singh and his wife Joginder Kaur were already present there. Gurpreet further claimed that Bahadur Singh and his wife were ploughing the crop, and when Navdeep objected and stopped them, there was a heated argument, and Bahadur Singh opened fire at him. Navdeep died on the spot.

The police arrested Bahadur Singh after they registered an FIR under Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita section 103 (murder) as well as sections of the Arms Act against him and Joginder Kaur at the Nihal Singh Wala police station.
