Authorities tighten vigilance at flood-prone Tiwana village
Officials said that due to the rise of water in the Patiala Ki Rao rivulet in the area, its flow was diverted from the Malakpur bridge to save the surrounding 50 villages from damage
On a road in Mohali on Sunday. (Express Photo by Jasbir Malhi) Being one of the most flood-prone areas in the district, the administration and the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) will keep a close eye at the embankment of the Ghaggar river in Tiwana village in Derabassi sub-division.
The low-lying villages including Tiwana, Dera, Alamgir and Khajur Mandi in Dera Bassi are vulnerable due to an increased flow of water in the Ghaggar in wake of the ongoing rains.
In a visit to Tiwana, MLA Derabassi Kuljit Singh Randhawa said that if this critical area is not strengthened, four villages would be directly hit.
Principal Secretary of Water Resources Department Krishan Kumar, who visited the site to take stock of the ongoing work for strengthening of the embankment, instructed the officials present to take immediate steps meticulously to ensure safety of the adjoining villages.
Deputy Commissioner Aashika Jain, while inspecting the Ghaggar embankment, said that the children and women of Tiwana village, had been shifted to Jashan Palace near Lalru as a precautionary measure.
She said that due to a sharp cut of the Ghaggar here, the flow of water erode the embankment, which the entire administration has been striving hard to protect it to avoid any breach for the past several days.
ADC (Rural Development) Amit Bamby said that due to the embankment being directly hit by the Ghaggar, there is constant monitoring. Executive Engineer Rajeev Grover said that though the situation is under control, for the next two or three days, monitoring will have to be maintained to ensure safety of the four adjoining villages.
