Senior Akali Leader and former deputy speaker of the Lok Sabha,Charanjit Singh Atwal and the BJP’s Dinesh Singh Babbu were on Tuesday unanimously elected as Speaker and Deputy Speaker of the Punjab Vidhan Sabha respectively. Atwal took over as the Speaker immediately after being elected. Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal had proposed Atwal’s name for the post while BJP legislative Party Leader Chunni Lal Bhagat stood up to second it. Opposition leader Sunil Jakhar also supported the candidature and later congratulated Atwal on being elected to the post for the second time. Jakhar pointed out that Atwal was the deputy speaker of the Lok Sabha when he was in the Opposition and urged members of the House to set a precedent by electing the deputy speaker from the Opposition.

Dinesh Singh Babbu of the BJP was, however, unanimously elected as the deputy speaker. Earlier Badal and Chunni Lal congratulated Atwal.

Charanjit Singh Atwal had been the Speaker of this House from 1997 to 2002. After taking over the chair,Atwal thanked the members of the both sides for electing him. He advised both sides that political differences should come in the way of official and social functions.””As some 46 new faces (first time MLAs) have come in this house, they reflect the youngsters so they should read the rules of procedures of the house and also old debates’’’ Atwal said.
