Kanwal Bakshi (78),who was suffering from kidney cancer, successfully underwent a five-hour long surgery at Fortis Hospital,Mohali,on Tuesday. As 85 per cent kidney cancers are asymptomatic, even in her case, she could not realise the progression of the disease, which by the time it was diagnosed, was found that a 20 cm tumour had developed in her right kidney.
The tumour had invaded all the major blood vessels going through the liver to her heart. Her legs had swollen because the tumour had blocked all major blood vessels carrying blood towards the heart from the abdomen and lower half of the body.
However, notwithstanding her age and the complications that the surgery involvedopening of the abdomen, liver and heart,Bakshi underwent the surgery.
The team of doctors comprised Dr Priyadarshi Ranjan,Uro-Oncologist and Kidney Transplant Surgeon,Dr Ambuj Chaudhary,Cardiac Surgeon,Dr Manoranjan Sahoo Cardiac Anesthesiologist,Dr R P Doley,Liver Surgeon, and Dr Swamy and Dr Ashwani.
