Union Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw on Friday said that work on the long-delayed redevelopment of the Chandigarh railway station “is going on in full swing” and will be completed much before the “designated time of five years”.

“Bohat acha tezi se kaam chal raha hai….chalte hue station mein kaam karna bohat mushkil hota hai…lekin fir bhi teams ne mehnat ki hai or is level pe leke aaye hain…The work is going on in full swing. It’s difficult to complete work in a functional station. Still, the teams are working hard and have brought it to this level,” he said.

The Rs 462 crore redevelopment project to make Chandigarh a “world-class railway station” began in January 2023 and was to be completed by May 2024. This deadline was extended to May 2025, and then to October 2025, but that too was missed.

Vaishnaw did not mention a completion date on Friday.

He said that the railway station will serve as a full-fledged station for both Chandigarh and Panchkula as it joins the two adjoining cities with a concourse. “It is a medium to join both Chandigarh and Panchkula. So, either the Chandigarh side or the Panchkula side, it will be a full-fledged station for both,” he said.

“It is a five-year project, and efforts are being made to complete it much before five years,” Vaishnaw said, pointing out that several innovations, including a modular design and the use of prefabricated elements, have been used.

Authorities say that 81 per cent of the redevelopment work is complete, and the remaining is expected to be completed soon.
