Art of the matter

It was always a hobby,a once in a while activity till it was prescribed as a remedy.

It was always a hobby,a once in a while activity till it was prescribed as a remedy.

For architect Gagan Chandhoke, art came as a rescue in fighting her ailments and restoring her health. A year later,it’s become her biggest de-stresser,a constant companion that keeps her imagination active and mind free of the daily pressures.

“Last year was tough. I was fighting one medical problem after another until I hit a low and the doctor told me to indulge in something that keeps me occupied and takes the strain off. Painting was always an interest and I picked my brushes again,” Gagan soon joined an art class in Sector 15 for a month and got going.

“I used to sketch off and on till I focused on acrylics,” her paintings have now found their way in her home and at office,Chandhoke & Associates Private Limited in Sector 9,Chandigarh. “Art is directly proportional to my health. The day I don’t paint,I feel sick, lost and so make it a point to find time… it is all correlated,” art’s a part of Gagan’s system now.

So much so that it’s a full-time passion, which receives a lot of appreciation. All this makes her want to paint more! “It’s a cycle… I have friends ordering for art,but I don’t want to sell for I never began with that intention. I might put an exhibition in a year or so though,” she adds.

As for her work,Gagan doesn’t believe in copying. Her pieces are translations of her imagination, bold and contemporary. “More like post-modernist,abstract acrylics and water colours on canvas. I have never liked realism…. soon,I’ll shift to oils,” says Gagan. All the best!
