Workshop on information security held
Workshop on Information Security Education and Awareness was held by the Centre for Advance Computing (C-DAC) at HMT,Pinjore,on Tuesday. Nearly 40 executives of HMT attended the workshop. Vijay Kumar of C-DAC,who was the resource person,shared that information security needed to be addressed at all levels,from an individual user to an organisation,extending up to the government and nation. “Information security is becoming synonymous with national security,as computer networking,which is vulnerable to cyber attacks,forms the backbone of critical infrastructure of the country’s banking,power,communication network and so on. It is,therefore,important to have secured computer systems and networks,” he said. He also gave useful tips to participants on how to make their computers and networks safe.

Cong has won 90 pc panchayat samiti seats,claims Mullana
The Congress party has made a sweep in the election of panchayat samitis concluded in the state last week. This was stated by Haryana Pradesh Congress Committee President Phool Chand Mullana while interacting with the media here today. He said the party had won 90 per cent seats in the block samities and zila parishads. He said all the tall claims of winning these elections by the opposition had proved false.

Woman commits suicide
A 45-year-old married woman,Sharda,committed suicide at her residence on Tuesday. Her body was found hanging from the ceiling fan. Her husband Pritam Singh,an employee of the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB),Sector 19,told the police that Sharda was under mental stress due to the small size of the government house alloted to them by the BBMB. She is survived by two daughters and a son.

PGI doctor awarded gold medal
Dr Vishal Kumar,senior resident in the Department of Orthopaedics,PGIMER,under Prof M S Dhillon was awarded the prestigious Ram Sulakshna Janam Pandey gold medal for best paper presentation at IFASCON 2010 at India Habitat Centre in New Delhi on Monday. The title of the paper was,“Tuberculosis of the foot presenting as an osteolytic lesion.” He has several national and international presentations and awards to his credit. ENS

CBSE affiliation of St John’s School extended
The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has extended the affiliation of St John’s School,Sector 26,Chandigarh,by another five years. This was stated by the school in a press release on Tuesday.

PU to offer free English coaching to minority students
The Department of Life Long Learning and Extension,Panjab University,has planned to start free English coaching classes for BA/BSc/BCom students belonging to SC/ST categories and minority social groups from the first week of September. The scheme will be funded by the UGC under the Scheme of General Development Grant during their 11th Year Plan. Both regular students attending institutes/colleges and private students are eligible. The objective is to improve academic skills,linguistic proficiency,raise level of comprehension,build strong foundation for further academic work and strengthen knowledge and skills in English,and to provide career guidance as well as counselling for capacity building. Over 300 students are expected to enroll for the programme.

District lawyers continue protest for free chambers
Lawyers at the district court continued their protest for the second day on Tuesday demanding free chambers. They said they were being discriminated and should be treated at par with lawyers of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. However,there is another group of lawyers who though wants the administration to construct the chambers,but are ready to take them on lease. The lawyers said they had waited for long and would continue protest till their demands are not met.

Plantation drive in MM University
Over 2000 saplings were planted in the MM University campus on Tuesday. The plantation campaign was inaugurated by District Red Cross Society chairperson Neelam Srow.

Saplings planted in Dadumajra
Former Mayor Kamlesh planted saplings in Dadumajra on Tuesday. Executive Engineer Horticulture Arun Kansal,SDO Pritpal Singh and area residents also planted saplings. More than 60 saplings have been planted around the boundary wall of dumping ground in Dadumajra including those of Bahera,Chakrassia,Koeloteria and Chandni.

Final order on Rathore reserved
After nearly a month long arguments,a revision petition filed by former director general of police S P S Rathore challenging his enhanced sentence was reserved for final orders on Tuesday by the court of Justice Jitendra Chauhan of the Punjab and Haryana High Court. The court has asked counsels appearing for all parties to submit their written submissions,if any,by 4 pm on Wednesday. Rathore’s sentence was enhanced to eighteen months by a sessions court on May 25. Earlier,a lower court had awarded him six months imprisonment.

Baby boy abandoned
A nine-month-old baby boy was found abandoned at the Sector 23 Mother Teresa Home in Chandigarh on Tuesday. The Chandigarh Police were informed about the baby by a staffer of the Home. The child was immediately shifted to the Government Multi-Specialty Hospital (GMSH-16),Chandigarh,where he is under observation.
