A day after the ruckus in the House meeting of the Municipal Corporation, the meeting of the Finance and Contract Committee (F&CC) witnessed heated arguments over several issues on Tuesday.
A bone of contention was the re-allotment of taxi stands that had earlier been cancelled. Allotment of 24 taxi stands had been canceled in November,2012 after violations were found. An agenda was mooted on Tuesday for re-allotment of these stands. Questions were raised by BJP councillors on how the allotment of taxi stands could be cancelled arbitrarily and then re-allotted.
The issue led to a heated discussion, with the BJP councillors stating that the allotment was cancelled even though their councillors had earlier opposed it and now the re-allotment was being proposed in an arbitrary manner. The Mayor contended that the agenda had been brought to the F&CC for discussion and he had not taken a decision. It was finally decided that a committee would be constituted to look into the issue of re-allotment of the taxi stands.
Another issue was sending the stray cattle from the city to cattle sheds in other cities. It was informed that a cattle shed was willing to accommodate the cattle for Rs 2,000 per cattle. It was argued that the cattle shed in question be visited and facilities checked.
The F&CC gave approval to increase the rates for stacking construction material. The rates in all categories had almost been doubled. It was decided that in case the area for which permission had been sought was found to be less than the actual area being used, then double the rent be charged and defaulters fined.
At present, anti rabies treatment is provided only at one dispensary in Sector 19. It was decided that the possibility of extending it to other dispensaries would be explored.
The proposal for purchase of new cars for the mayor and municipal commissioner was mooted. It was proposed that an Innova car be purchased for the mayor. Administrative approval for the same will now be sought.
The auction of the exhibition ground in Sector 34 will be done four times a year, instead of once. The committee members accorded approval to increase the rates for booking exhibition ground in Sector 34,Sector 17 and Manimajra by around 25 per cent.
The pilot project for garbage collection in Sector 22 has been extended by three months. However, councillors suggested that if the project is successful, then it should be replicated in other areas as well. It was stated that there should be a time limit for a pilot project.
The three mechanised sweeping machines continue to be white elephants. The F&CC approved estimates of around Rs 1 crore for the annual maintenance contract and brushes of these machines.
