The Punjab and Haryana High Court Wednesday directed the Punjab government to make efforts to expedite the hearing of its appeal in the Supreme Court where in it has challenged the constitution of Judicial Tribunal on the directions of High Court.
The Judicial Tribunal, consecutive to probe the alleged illegal properties owned by several high ups in the citys periphery, had stopped functioning last month after it had submitted two status reports. Justice (retd) Kuldip Singh had already resigned citing health grounds. When the matter came up for resumed hearing on Wednesday, the high court was told that the government is dragging its feat on the appeal challenging the constitution of the tribunal. Taking strong note of this, the HC directed the Punjab government to request the apex court for early hearing of its appeal.
The appeal is slated to come up for hearing on September 20. The High Court will hear the matter on September 23.
Last year,on May 30,the HC had set up Judicial Tribunal to find out the alleged illegal properties owned by high-ups in the citys periphery and other parts of Punjab. Setting up of the tribunal was opposed tooth and nail by the Punjab government.
The Tribunal comprises retired Supreme Court Judge,Justice Kuldip Singh and assisted by Advocate P N Aggarwal,an expert in property cases, and B N Gupta, retired District and Sessions Judge (DSJ) from Haryana.
