Mayor Poonam Sharma on Thursday found a dead lizard in the mid-day meal that was to be served to children and a pregnant woman at an Anganwadi centre in Mauli Complex.
Employees of the Anganwadi centre called Sharma on Thursday morning after discovering the dead lizard in the
food.
Following the phone call, the mayor rushed to the Anganwadi centre and found that around 30 children below the age of three years and a pregnant woman were living there in a miserable condition.
The children and some women, who work at the centre, were sitting in a small room in unhygienic condition. There was no arrangement for toilets or wash basins.
Employees of the Anganwadi centre said there are 30 such centres situated in Mauli Complex and 500 others across the city.
The employees added that all these centres are lying in deplorable condition and there is no one to keep a check. After visiting the Anganwadi centre, Mayor Poonam Sharma met UT Adviser Vijay Dev and apprised him about the matter, seeking a probe into the incident and poor conditions of the Anganwadi centres.
She requested the adviser to call a meeting with the officers concerned to discuss the matter and frame a policy to improve the condition of the centres and provide them with better services, including building and infrastructure.
Mayor Sharma added that water purifier should also be made available in the Anganwadi centres along with proper furniture, clean toilets and hygienic food.
