The wait of those hoping for the resumption of Amritsar-Delhi-Toronto flight from Sri Guru Ramdas Jee International Airport,Rajansani,Amritsar, will get longer with the Air India deciding to continue with the suspension of the service in winter,as well.
The flight, suspended a few months ago till October, will continue to be suspended till March 2013,sources said, adding that a communication to the effect was sent to Air India authorities in Amritsar.
Crying foul over the suspension of the flight,BJP leader and Amritsar Member of Parliament Navjot Singh Sidhu has been pressing hard for the resumption of the flight, while underlining that the flight had a tremendous potential in terms of occupancy and profitability.
An Amritsar-based NGO Amritsar Vikas Manch has also been demanding the restart of the flight.
There was no announcement regarding restarting the flight in October. It had been suspended till October, and now the airline management has decided to extend the suspension of the flight, an Air India official said, adding that he was unaware of the details the airlines decision.
In the absence of Amritsar-Delhi-Toronto flight, residents of Punjab are left with no choice, but to go to Delhi to board a flight for Canada, which has a sizeable population of Punjabis.
Sidhu had stated earlier that the Amritsar International Airport was being deliberately ignored, and despite state-of-the-art infrastructure and scope for profitability due to the high occupancy rate, the airport was made to suffer losses.
