Two youths, aged 22 and 23,from Chhota Kotkachhwa village drowned in flash flood in Tangri river on Monday evening. While one body was recovered, the rescue operation was on for the second body.

Identified as Jitender and Rinku, the two worked as construction labourers and had gone to reap sarkanda (grass). Since the grass was grown across the riverbed, they jumped into the water to go across the river, and were washed away.

Two other youths accompanying them raised the alarm on seeing them drowning. Villagers soon gathered at the spot and launched a search operation. When no clue was found because of the darkness, they informed the police.

Police teams rushed to the spot but even their efforts bore no fruit. The tehsildar too reached the spot.

When the rescue operation resumed on Tuesday, the administration pressed into service divers, who were successful in fishing out the body of Jitender near Lalana village,6 km from the place of the incident, around 3 pm.

The rescue operation was supervised by Additional Deputy Commissioner S S Phulia and Tehsildar Rajiv Kumar Sharma. Phulia said the search for the second boy was in progress.

At the time of filing this report, the search was still on for the second body.
