Even as the Department for Alumni Relations at Panjab University (PU) introduced the system of online registration for its alumni, the system does not appear to be of much help since there are no provisions to pay the membership fee online.
To pay the membership fee,the alumni still have to either visit a branch of the State Bank of India (SBI) or send a demand draft. The online registration system remains restricted to uploading individual details with the department.
For any old student of the university, who resides outside the city, the online system of payment makes the process convenient. When all other facilities are available online, why doesnt the university introduce the facility of online payment? said an alumni.
While the proposal to introduce the online fee payment system was mooted nearly an year ago,no developments have been made so far.
Department Chairperson Neelam Grover said,We are in the process of starting the facility. The system is in its infant stage. We will soon formally launch it.
So far,5,060 alumni have registered themselves with the department. Among these, there are a total of 32 patron members, including Pawan Kumar Bansal,Union Minster for Parliamentary Affairs; Kumari Selja,Minister for Housing and Urban Poverty Alleviation; and Jagmohan Kang,Punjab MLA.
To introduce the online fee payment facility, the university would follow the e-collect system initiated by the SBI for collection of fee from university students, informed an official of PUs Computer Centre. The e-collect system for online fee payment for students was introduced last year.
