Local AI officials make presentation to CMD,await his nod.

Air India (AI) has mooted a proposal to start flights to Dubai and Bangkok from Chandigarh Airport. A presentation was recently given by Air India officials from Chandigarh at New Delhi. The final approval to the proposal is awaited. Proposals for starting international flights from the city have been mooted time and again over the past few years. However, the nod from Ministry of Defence has not been received. Officials are hopeful that with Air India being a state carrier, the approval for the flights would be accorded.

The proposal was prepared by Chandigarh AI officials after surveying the demands of the Tricity residents. It was felt that direct flights to Dubai and Bangkok would be popular among local commuters. The presentation was given to the Air India Chairman and Managing Director (CMD). Air India Station Manager M R Jindal said,“A proposal has been mooted with the CMD for starting direct flights to Dubai and Bangkok. It was felt that there would be high traffic on these routes and the flights would prove to be a success. The approval from the CMD is awaited.”

Starting of international flights from the Airport has been awaited for the past few years. Recently,Air Arabia had mooted a proposal to start a flight to Sharjah. This did not receive approval from the Ministry of Defence. Prior to this, proposals of other airlines to start international flights have been rejected.

The facilities at the Airport were upgraded with a new terminal being inaugurated in April last year. Built in an area of 17 acres, the building has two floors and is more spacious than the old one.

The old building was demolished and construction is going on to increase the apron area. Two aerobridges would also be constructed. The construction activity was delayed due to shortage of building material because of which a number of other projects in various states have been affected.

The airport has also received the status of custom airport that is mandatory before international flights are started. Air India had also proposed starting of Chandigarh-Mumbai flights.

At present there is just one Air India flight from Chandigarh Airport. Earlier there were flights to other destinations as well.
