A division bench of the high court on Thursday ordered the evacuation of all seven boys hostels of Himachal Pradesh University within 24 hours. Following the order, the university directed the students to pack up their belongings and vacate the hostel rooms.
The university registrar was asked to invite written application from the students who intend to occupy the hostels to complete their examination and on-going study. The students were given time till Thursday evening to submit their application. The students will personally present the application to the registrar, the court said.
The development came after Shimla police informed the court that raids done last evening on directions of the high court led to the recovery of lethal weapons and other objectionable articles including iron-rods,200 knives, swords and 110 lathis.
The police report also revealed overcrowding in hostels with unauthorised occupants. The seven hostels with a combined capacity of 800 students had atleast 2,000 students living in the dorms.
Many of these unauthorised residents are members of students organisations including SFI and ABVP. These two organisations had been creating lawlessness in the campus, disturbing academic atmosphere and carrying out political activities with support of the university teachers, who are also members of these bodies and other parties.
