The Chandigarh railway station witnessed complete chaos on Sunday as thousands of young men and women thronged the station after appearing in Railway Recruitment Board (RRB) exam held at various centres across the city. In spite of the special train being run to accommodate the crowd, people were seen crossing the tracks and jostling fellow passengers to get into the train.

A special train was made available from Chandigarh to Ambala and was scheduled to depart at 3.30 pm. However, just after the exam got over around 12.30 pm,students started arriving at the station.

Platform number one and two were found jam-packed with thousands of students waiting for the train.

Additional security

staff was deployed by the railway authorities to ensure safety of the passengers. However, due to the excessive rush, passengers had to face problems.

In an attempt to catch the train and find space in the overcrowded coaches, many were seen jeopardising their security and putting their life in peril. Instead of using the foot overbridge to reach the platform number two, they were seen crossing the tracks.

The first passenger train was scheduled for 1.50 pm,following which a special train was to leave for Ambala at 3.30 pm. This was followed by another train at 4.30 pm.

Talking to Chandigarh Newsline,Praveen Kumar,Station Superintendent, said,“Yes,there was some chaos due to the overcrowding of the station. But whenever an examination like this is held, candidates from across the region come to the city as Chandigarh is a big centre and this leads to overcrowding of the station. There were around four trains starting from 1.40 pm. However, everyone wanted to go in the first train itself.”
