For family, end of a dilemma: ‘we can now begin legal fight’

Tarsem Singh said they wanted Amritpal to surrender as “some people were being harassed” because of him. “We will fight the case in the court. The whole community should fight. He was working to save people from the drug menace. The government is defaming the one who was saving the youth. The government is eliminating those who fight against drugs,” he added.

The father said if police wanted him to surrender, “it could have been done at his home too,” but the drama that was to happen has happened. “We feel honored that he surrendered as a baptised Sikh as there were rumours that he has cut his hair,” said father.

Balwinder Kaur too expressed happiness over the fact “our son surrendered while being in full Sikhi sarup”

Amritpal’s uncle Sukhchain Singh, who retired as an inspector from Punjab Armed Police (PAP) on February 28 this year, meanwhile said that the family came to about the surrender from news channels.

“We came to know through the media at 7:15 am that he has been arrested. Police said that Amritpal was arrested while Jasbir Singh Rode, former Jathedar of the Akal Takht, said he surrendered. It will be clear in a day or two,” Sukhchain said.

“This, however, has put an end to the dilemma the family had been going through. We can now begin the legal fight,” said Sukhchain.

Concerned about his fate, his family had been maintaining that the preacher did not contact them while he was on the run.

Sukhchain had earlier said that the family was unaware of the preacher’s whereabouts and that “he should surrender immediately to save innocent people who were being picked up by police” from harassment.
