Despite the concept of Holi celebrations with eco-friendly colours gaining popularity in the city, adulteration of Holi colours go unchecked due to the absence of a designated authority for the same.
Although,a number of cases of skin and eye problems are reported after Holi, every year, synthetic and Chinese colours continue to flood the markets of the Tricity. While some residents prefer herbal colours over the ones with chemicals, there are many who still buy these as they are cheaper.
Even shopowners across the Tricity admit that synthetic colours are of poor quality and should be avoided. Every year we get complaints of skin problems, but still there are people who buy these as they cost almost half the price of the herbal ones. These contain a lot harmful chemicals and since there isnt an authority to keep a check on their quality, people must avoid them, said Mohit Kumar,a shopowner.
Companies like RB Colour and Shri Ganesha that are certified by International Organisation for Standardisation (ISO) claim to offer superior quality colours, but since nobody checks the authenticity of the synthetic colours, there is no guarantee regarding their quality, said another shopowner,Harit.
One of the officials of the Health Department said,Since the Holi colours dont fall under the category of either cosmetics or eatables, quality checks regarding the same dont fall under our ambit.
