The FIRST semester exams in the city government schools are just another week away, and there are some students who are still running from pillar to post to get confirmed seats in class XI.

Even after three rounds of counselling, as many as 450 students are still on the waiting list in each of the government schools. Following complaints from the parents that their children were not getting admission anywhere, the UT Education Department had issued notices to about 13 schools where seats were lying vacant.

Parents and students in large numbers are visiting the education department with applications requesting to get admissions done in nearby schools. This is because many students do not want to travel long distances.

A student, Rehim Singh, who had secured 3.5 CGPA, said, “I have visited the education department seven times to request them to allot me a seat in some school. However, I have always been asked to wait or to talk to the DEO.”

Another student, Vijay, who is differently abled, said, “My father has been taking leaves from his job to accompany me to the department, but there is nobody to sympathise with me. How long will I have to wait for my admission to get done? Vijay has completed class X from the Government Senior Secondary School, Manimajra (Model Town), with 4 CGPA.

Seats are lying vacant at the government model senior secondary schools (GMSSSs) in Sector 33, GMSSS-32, GMSSS-Karsan, GMSSS-18, GMSSS-46 and GMSSS-20, and the government senior secondary schools (GSSSs) in Khuda Lahora, Maloya, Behlana, Kaimbwala, Raipurkhurd, GSSS-23, GSSS-45 and GSSS-MM Town.
