A photo exhibition chronicles the Kumbh mela’s various shades
A sea of humanity, the many faces of faith, the ebb and flow of the Ganges, the procession of pilgrims from around the world. Three photographers capture all this and more in their exhibition,The Colours of Mahakumbh. As many as 60 photographs bring the audience closer to The Kumbh or the Pitcher Festival, the largest gathering of people in the world. The Mahakumbh is held every 144 years on the banks of the Sangam in Prayag or Allahabad. Almost 80 million people are estimated to have bathed in the holy waters of the Ganges on the shahi snan of the Mauni Amavasya.
Gurpreet Singh,an engineer by profession,Shubh Mohan Singh,a psychiatrist and Vijendra Trighatia,a banker, are all passionate photographers who decided to get up-close and personal with the Mahakumbh, and capture their experiences through visuals. Their journey and the exhibition,is an attempt to share the extraordinary moments they experienced among an ocean of humanity. “In doing so,we tried to cover not only the holy men and women but also the pilgrims who travel from all over the world to be a part of this community of faith,’’ say the photographers and travel enthusiasts.
Walk along the Ganges,as a few pictures welcome you to the Mahakumbh, with stunning pictures of sadhus, puja rituals, prayers and the ghats brightly lit up at night.
