After their success in the New Delhi Assembly elections, members of the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) have stepped up their activities in the city. Besides supporting various sections of society in raising demands, the party has also attracted members into its fold. With Arvind Kejriwal set to take over as the Chief Minister of the national capital, the party unit has received a further boost.
AAP leaders have already expressed their intention to field a candidate from the city for the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections. Also,in the run up to the elections, the party is extending support to different sections of the society over many issues.
The new political party has also set alarm bells ringing for parties in the city. At a conference of Trade and Industry organised by BJPs Chandigarh unit, the incharge of the city unit – Aarti Mehra – said that AAP needed to be taken seriously. Mehra said that AAP had fought against and defeated the Congress in New Delhi. She went on to say that in Chandigarh there was a need to go to every house and ask people to vote for BJP.
The AAP members are seen supporting PGT (Computer) teachers in their protest for demanding better wages from the education department. From selling groundnuts,to sweeping the roads and holding candle light marches, several means have been adopted to get the demands heard.
Also, the AAP supported residents of Colony Number 5 when they complained of inflated electricity bills being delivered to them.
Further, members of the party submitted a memorandum tot he DSP seeking action in the case where a a minor girl from Khuda Lahora alleged being gang raped by policemen. Another issue that saw the intervention of the AAP was use of substandard material in carpeting of a road in Sector 19. The party demanded a probe into the issue.
AAP membership has seen a surge over the past few weeks. Executive member of the party,Gurjusjit Singh, said that the membership drive of the party was an ongoing process. Our membership has witnessed an increase. We are getting in touch with people and enrolling them. Enrollment can be done online as well. The response is very positive, he said.
AAP seems to have given other parties in the city a reason to think. Going by its success in Delhi, the party is likely to attract voters in Chandigarh as well thereby denting the votebank of the Congress and BJP.
Both parties are now trying to estimate the impact AAP could have in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections.
