More than a year after the foundation of the Food Street was laid in Sector 48,the Municipal Corporation (MC) has realised that the proximity of the site to a proposed slow carriageway makes it unfeasible to go ahead with construction.

Now,the Food Street will have to be shifted a few feet away from the site. For this,a revised plan will be sent to the UT Administration. It is only after the plan gets approval that construction will begin.

Proposed to be built with the aim to provide a facility for residents of the southern sectors, the foundation of the Food Street was laid in December 2009. With a large number of housing societies in the area,a substantial population of the city resides in these sectors.

From December 2009 onwards, tenders for construction were invited a number of times, but these failed to yield a response. Early this year, the tender was finally allotted. However, construction could not begin as officials realised that a slow carriageway was to be constructed in front of the proposed site.

Area Councillor Jatinder Bhatia said the area’s zoning plan should have been studied before allotment of the site. “The officials have told me that they had written to the architecture department regarding the changes that need to be made in the plan. Thereafter, construction will begin,” he added. The UT Architecture Department’s will have to approve the revised plan. This could lead to delay in beginning of construction work, resulting in an increase in the project cost.

The proposal for the Food Street was mooted after first Night Food Street in Sector 15 became a success.
