A class III student was allegedly raped and killed in Chhachi village near Haripur in Solan district on Saturday.
The body of the eight-year-old girl was found partially buried on Sunday after a massive search was started by her parents and the police.
Later in the day, the police arrested a class IX student in Haripur, who reportedly confessed to the crime, said SP (Solan) Ramesh Chhajta. The accused is apparently a relative of the girl and belongs to the same village.
Chhajta said, “I visited the village with forensic experts from the State Forensic Science Lab. The girl’s body was sent for a postmortem to the Indira Gandhi Medical College in Shimla to make it a foolproof case.” An FIR has been registered at the Kandaghat police station.
Reports suggest the accused lured the girl by offering her a packet of chips when she was on her way home from school. He attempted to rape her, but got scared when she started crying and strangulated her to death. The boy returned home after burying the body under stones and sand.
Chhajta said, “It is a very serious crime but the accused is a juvenile. Our hands are tied as we have to adopt a different procedure in the investigation. We will do our job and file challans as soon as we get the forensic and postmortem reports.”
