Breaking its own record set last year,MTech in Computer Science has once again emerged as the most sought after masters engineering course in Panjab University.

As many as 635 candidates gave the entrance examination conducted by PU for the 20 seats on offer at the University Institute of Engineering and Technology (UIET). The number of applicants was around 400 last year.

The second most popular course is Electronics and Communication with 510 candidates who appeared for the Common Entrance Test. Interestingly, this course attracted more applications than Information Technology which was third with 350 applications.

Jitendra Kumar Goswami,a professor in the computer science department of UIET said,“Not only is M Tech Computer Science popular but this and IT are cross over branches. There has been a trend of students with B Tech degrees in computer science switching over to IT for a masters degree and the reverse too. Even B Tech students in electronics switch over to computer science. Thus, this is one of the reasons M Tech or ME in computer science is most popular.”

Talking about job opportunities after completing this two-year masters degree,Goswami said,“Some of the sectors in the industry demand ME over BE or B Tech in computer science. As the popularity of these professional courses is directly dependent on the demand,it would not be wrong to say that computer science sector is generating huge demand, which would sustain in the coming years too.”

Along with these two M Tech courses, information technology, electronics and microelectronics are offered at UIET. M Tech courses in chemical and polymer are available at University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology, one of the oldest departments of the University. Sophisticated Analytical Instrumentation Facility (SAIF),CIL and UCIM offers M Tech in instrumentation.

Harish Kumar,a senior faculty member at UIET,said,“Computer science is a generic field while IT is a specific one. Students prefer computer science as it offers a broader scope. Also, with the recent slowdown in the IT sector, computer science has emerged as the most popular course.”

Surprisingly, almost all the applying candidates are from the neighbouring states and very small number from Chandigarh. Even professionals who have job experience in various industries take up this course at PU.

V K Rattan,Chairperson UICET,said,“As the preference of BE students in PU is job placements and majority of them are placed, very few opt for the masters course. The students are from neighbouring states like Haryana,Punjab,Himachal Pradesh.”

When asked about the reason for majority of outstation candidates,UIET professor Goswami said,“There are not many takers for M Tech from Panjab University. But there are many from universities from Haryana and even Jammu and Kashmir. Some students are also from Delhi,Uttar Pradesh and Uttarakhand.”

The colleges offering these M Tech courses are UIET — Computer Science,Electronics and Communication,Information Technology and Microelectronics. UICET — Chemical and Polymer. SAIF,CIL and UCIM — Instrumentation.
