AS MANY AS 53 of the 105 convictions, under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act, 1985, were secured by Chandigarh Police in 2016, said RTI in its reply to a query filed by Chandigarh Newsline. Of the remaining convictions, 20 were reported in 2015 and 32 in 2017. The RTI reply also revealed that nine of the 19 acquittals were reported in 2015, five in 2016 and four in 2017.
According to the reply, police registered 463 FIRs under the NDPS Act and secured convictions in 105 between January 1, 2015, and August 31, 2017. In 150 cases of drug peddling and smuggling, chargesheets have been submitted. The majority of convictions were reported in cases registered at Sector 34 and Manimajra police stations. The reply also stated that the 24 accused, including 12 arrested by Manimajra police and 12 by the Sector 34 PS, were convicted.
“All these convictions were reported in cases registered in the last two-and-a-half years. In the cases of acquittal, the judgments are being studied and if these are found fit for further challenge, these acquittals will be challenged in the Punjab and Haryana High Court,” said a senior police officer.
A total of 163 FIRs out of 463 were registered by the operations cell and crime branch of Chandigarh Police. The operations cell registered 58 cases and the crime branch 105 cases of drug peddling between January 1, 2015, and August 31, 2017.
At Manimajra, of the 58 FIRs registered, 19 accused were convicted and four acquitted. At Sector 26 police station, 22 FIRs were registered and seven convicted. At Sector 31 police station, 33 FIRs were registered, one accused was convicted and one acquitted while the rest of the cases are undergoing trial pending investigation. At Sector 11 police station, of the 38 FIRs registered, there have been eight convictions and five acquittals. At Maloya PS, of the 50 FIRs filed, three have been convicted and one was acquitted.
