(Express Photo)Five people, aged 19 to 23, were killed after their Hyundai Verna car crashed into a divider near the toll plaza during the intervening night of Sunday and Monday in Ladhowal in Punjab’s Ludhiana.
The deceased included three men and two women, said police, adding that they were friends and had come to Ludhiana for shopping over the weekend.
While three deceased men were from Jagraon town of Ludhiana district, the two women were from Moga. The crash was so impactful that bodies of both women were dismembered.
The deceased were identified as Simranjit Singh alias Simmu, 23 of Ajit Nagar, Jagraon, Satpal Singh alias Sukha, 20 and Veeru, 21, both from Kothe Khajura village, Jagraon. The women were identified as Jashanpreet Kaur and Arshpreet Kaur, both from Moga.
ASI Manjit Singh, investigation officer in the case, from Ladhowal police station, said that the deceased had come to Ludhiana city to buy new clothes. The Verna car also belonged to Simranjit and he was driving it, said the ASI. “Prima facie, the vehicle was over-speeding, went out of control and it crashed into the divider,” said the ASI.
The two women were pursuing a beauty and wellness course in Ludhiana. Simranjit was preparing for IELTS with hopes of moving to the UK. Satpal worked with a DJ, while Veeru worked at a tailoring shop.
Gagandeep Singh, brother of Simranjit, recounted that his brother left home around 8.30 pm on Sunday, driving the Hyundai Verna the family had bought just two months ago. He said that Simranjit had gone to Ludhiana with friends for shopping. Hours later, the family received the devastating news.
Police registered inquest proceedings at Ladhowal police station.
