A matrimonial dispute went awry when a man shot at his father-in-law in the latter’s Sector 36C residence here this evening. The incident took place in house number 1018,which is a few meters from the Sector 36 police station.

The police have arrested Hardeep Singh Grewal,40,a real estate agent,in a case of attempt to murder under Section 307 of the IPC. His father-in-law,65-year-old Gurcharan Singh, had a narrow escape as the bullet just swept past his right ear following which it hit the wall of their drawing room.

The police control room received a call at 5.30 pm of a firing incident in the posh Sector 36 locality, following which Grewal,a Mohali resident, was arrested while creating a huge ruckus inside the house. His wife Anmol Grewal had left his Mohali Sector 71 residence some days back and gave a report to the Sector 36 police station on November 10,stating that she was tortured by her husband and in-laws and was leaving the city on her own will and that her parents had no role to play in it. The couple have been married since 2002 and have two sons.

Today,Hardeep came to his parents-in-laws’ house in a fit of rage and asked his father-in-law Gurcharan Singh,a retired businessman, where his wife was. He then pulled out a .32 bore US-make revolver and shot at Gurcharan. The bullet pierced into the wall and has been recovered.

The police reached the spot and arrested Hardeep, the son of a retired Army Colonel. They had a trying time while arresting him. Four policemen could be seen catching hold of Hardeep’s legs and hands as the accused was heavily drunk and went out of control on seeing the police.

The police said that Gurcharan had anticipated that his son-in-law would turn violent and had, therefore, also deployed a bouncer in his house. It was this bouncer who called the police control room.
