As many as four Chandigarh Police women officials — a DSP and three inspectors — have been selected for the United Nations Peacekeeping Mission, better known as UN Mission for year 2023.
One of the selected officers, DSP (traffic) Gurjeet Kaur, joined her duty in the UN Mission in South Sudan last week.

Other three selected inspectors are Inspector Kulbir Kaur, Inspector Chander Mukhi and Inspector Parvesh Sharma. DSP Gurjeet Kaur had gone to South Sudan on September 4. Two inspectors — Kulbir Kaur and Chander Mukhi — are expected to leave for the UN Mission next month. DSP Kaur is a recipient of the Administrator’s Police Medal for Distinguished Services on August 15 this year.
A source said, “Inspector Parvesh Sharma had gone to UN Mission but returned due to personal reasons. Four women police personnel were among 69 personnel, including state’s police, paramilitary forces and Army, who were selected for UN Mission. From Chandigarh Police, six police personnel appeared in the test while four managed to clear the test last year.”
The test was divided into four parts: writing skills in English language; verbal communication with the members of screening committee and selection board in English; driving test on roads; and firing with different weapons.

One of the selected candidates said, “Writing test in English is the basic test. A candidate has to clear all the exams. If the candidate does not clear the first exam, then he/she cannot be eligible to appear in the second test. If a candidate fails in the second test, he/she would be shown the door.”
The minimum posting time in UN Peacekeeping Mission is one year and a willing person can obtain an extension of three months for at least four times. A police officer said, “Besides international exposure and experience, the selected personnel in the UN Mission also receives double salaries — one from the police department and another from the UN Mission, which pays the salary in US dollars.” In 2019, six women UT Police personnel were selected for the UN Mission.
