Even three months after the beginning of the academic session, most students of city-based government schools are yet to receive books and uniforms. The tenders for the uniforms were initially floated in the month of February but have not yielded an effect till now. Two or three common books are still missing in schools.
Government Teachers Union (GTU) member and principal of the government school at Sector 34,Vinod Sharma, said,Most of the books have reached the respective schools but due to various reasons like printing and supply, many books are still left. While all schools have floated the tenders for the uniforms, they have not received these yet. According to the concerned companies, the uniforms will probably be ready by the end of mid-July.
Vinod Sharma added,This happens every year, the books always come late to the schools and this is the reason I plan to start with a book bank in my school,in which we will retain the books of the students who have passed out in our library such that the new sessions students can study from the beginning itself.
As per the provisions of the Right to Education (RTE) Act,2009,all government school students are entitled to receive free books and uniforms upto Class VIII. This time, the department had set up a centre at Government Model School for Girls,Sector 18 for the distribution of books.
Jashanpreet Singh,a class VI student of Government Model School,Sector 20,said,Its been three months since we started our classes and we have got only three books till now. We all were thinking that well get all the books after the summer vacations.
Today, another section of our class got the books, the teachers said that we will get them tomorrow. We have been waiting for so long for the books,we cannot study after going back home, added Jashanpreet.
Though principals and teachers claim that they have already distributed the books to more than 95 per cent of the students, children say that two or three books are still missing, such as those of Hindi,Science and Computer. We sometimes have to share books with the student who has borrowed the old books from one of his seniors, said a student of Government School,Sector 23.
Most of the students are seen complaining about the books not reaching on time especially Hindi and Science. Ankur,a class VII student of Government School,Sector 33,said,We all ask for the books daily but the teachers say that the books will come in a day or two.
Akshay Gupta, the father of two children who are studying in a government school in Sector 20 said,Children dont get books but we as parents have to suffer, what should we teach them without books? The government should be responsible enough to send the books on time.
Kanwaljeet Singh,a teacher at Government Model School,Sector 21 said that he received almost all the books on Friday from the centre and the books will be distributed soon to the students.
