The names of three inspectors of the Chandigarh Police have been recommended for the post of Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP). These include Inspector Rajesh Shukla,Devinder Sharma and Bhupinder Singh.

Out of the three inspectors, only Inspector Rajesh Shukla has completed a term of six years as an inspector while Sharma will be meeting the eligibility in April and Singh in June.

Inspector Bhupinder Singh,Station House Officer (SHO) Police Station Sector 36,is presently facing a departmental inquiry for grave misconduct, negligence and dereliction of his duties and losing his temper over subordinates as SHO,Police Station Sector 36. This inquiry was initiated on October 6 last year after an incident of outraging the modesty of a woman. This incident had resulted in a reality check for the UT Police, following which a campaign against those who outrage the modesty of a woman was started.

Inspector Rajesh Shukla, posted in VIP Security,is facing two departmental inquiries at present. One of the inquiries was initiated after the Police Complaints Authority (PCA) had passed orders alleging gross use of power and misconduct on October 31,2011.

Another inquiry was initiated against Shukla after he had failed to take action as per the “gravity of situation” while he was posted as an SHO in Police Station,Manimajra on August 9,lat year. Following this,he was transferred to VIP Security.

Also,on August 8,2009 Inspector Rajesh Shukla was suspended after he “failed to control drug menace and discrepancies in his prime duties regarding prevention and detection of crime” while he was SHO,Police Station Sector 39.

Though Devinder Sharma, presently posted in Police Lines,is not facing any departmental inquiry at present,he too had been in the news previously. Devinder Sharma was suspended while he was posted as the SHO at Police Station Sector 39 in August 2009.

Inspector Sharma was suspended for “covering up lapse/ involvement of a head constable with drug peddlers”. Sharma’s suspension was a consequence of the hushing up of a case involving a drug peddler,Raju. The inquiry in the same indicted Sharma for “dereliction in duty”.

Shukla had hit the headlines a few years ago after he allegedly lost some case files, following which he was suspended and faced regular departmental inquiries.

Sharma,on the other hand, was also booked on charges of alleged wrongful confinement, assault, kidnapping and abduction of a complainant in Sector 36 police station in the year 1998. He was allegedly caught with a woman in a compromising position for which he was thrashed by the residents. In an attempt to escape the public-beating,he allegedly fired gunshots in the air. He was made to apologise,by climbing atop of a car and saying ‘sorry’ with folded hands.
