3 dead in road accidents

Balwant Rai,a resident of Baltana,died after his electric bike was hit by a speeding truck near the Fun Republic traffic light.

Two men died in separate road accidents in Manimajra in the last 24 hours. Both were not wearing helmets at the time of incident.

* 50-year-old run over by speeding truck
Balwant Rai,a resident of Baltana,died after his electric bike was hit by a speeding truck near the Fun Republic traffic light. According to the police,Rai was on his way home when the truck hit the bike in an attempt to overtake him. Rai lost his balance and fell on the road. “The truck’s front wheel rolled over the victim’s chest and the victim died on the spot,” said an eyewitness. The truck driver,identified as Jaswant Singh,is absconding. A case of rash driving and causing death due to negligence has been registered.

* 24-year-old mowed down by car
Vipin Kumar,a resident of Kangra,died after a Sport Utility Vehicle (SUV) hit his motorcycle near Manimajra late on Monday night. Kumar was returning to his sister’s house in Sector 40 with his cousin Amit when the accident occurred. Amit,who was riding pillion,sustained minor injuries and was discharged after first aid.

“We were returning from our brother’s house after dinner. Suddenly,a white Scorpio sprung out from the wrong side of the road. Its glaring headlights made it impossible for us to see. The next moment,the vehicle had hit our motorcycle and we fell on the road. The driver sped away with the car,” Amit told the police. The police rushed to the two to Government Multi Specialty Hospital in Sector 16,where Kumar succumbed to his injuries.

A case of rash driving and causing death due to negligence has been registered against the car driver. Kumar had come to the city to undergo physical tests for recruitment in the Indo-Tibetan Border Police.

Panjab University staffer crushed under speeding bus
MOHALI
: Ajaib Singh,a senior assistant with Panjab University,was crushed under the wheels of a recklessly driven private bus in Mohali on Tuesday evening. Ajaib,a resident of Phase IX,was returning home after paying obeisance at Gurdwara Singh Shahidan in Sohana village when the bus ran over his scooter near Sector 70,investigation officer Assistant Sub-Inspector Manjeet Singh told Newsline. The unidentified driver fled the spot after the accident leaving the bus behind. The vehicle has been impounded and a manhunt launched to nab the accused,ASI Manjeet said. Ajaib is survived by his wife Paramjeet Kaur,who works as a senior assistant with Punjab Labour Commission,and two sons aged 20 and 18. A case of causing death by negligence and rash driving has been lodged against the driver,the ASI added.
